Brett Charles Seiler: Riding In Cars With Boys at Galerie EIGEN + ART Berlin (12 January - 25 February 2023)
Galerie EIGEN + ART Berlin presents the first solo exhibition Riding In Cars With Boys by South African artist Brett Charles Seiler in Europe. In the programme of Galerie EIGEN + ART since 2021, he lives and works in Cape Town, where Seiler completed his art studies at the Ruth Prowse School of Art in 2015.
Brett Charles Seiler's work encompasses elements of painting, drawing, installation and object art; text and language also play a major role. Sometimes poetic, nostalgic or romantic, it is a component of his art or also stands on its own as a work. In his paintings, the space is indeterminate, the figures are not located but sketchy and fleeting, the text elements seem spontaneous. The colouring moves in a narrow spectrum between black, grey, white and brown tones; mixed variations of the material he predominantly uses: Bitumen. Wood is also frequently used. These simple and rather rough materials, usually used in street or house construction, contrast with the intimate, tender pictorial situations. Gender, relationships, self-determination and self-discovery are central themes in his work. Coming from Zimbabwe, a state where homosexual acts between men are punishable, Seiler's works also set an example for equal sexual orientation.
"[My work] is a deep longing for understanding. Based on something I lack, something I cannot return to. Painting is a process of research." (Brett Seiler)
